Hudson, OH – Crafting giant Joann Fabrics has confirmed plans to close over 500 of its retail stores, including multiple locations in New York, Ohio, and other states. The decision comes as the company seeks to cut costs and streamline its operations in the face of mounting financial challenges.
According to Syracuse.com, 24 stores in New York alone will be affected, including two locations in Central New York. The closures will roll out gradually throughout 2025, with some stores expected to shut their doors as early as spring.
USA Today reported that the move is part of Joann’s broader restructuring strategy aimed at reducing operational costs and adapting to shifting consumer preferences toward online shopping. The pandemic-era crafting boom had initially boosted sales, but demand has waned, leaving Joann burdened with excess inventory and underperforming stores.
Customers in affected areas have voiced disappointment, with many longtime patrons relying on Joann for fabric, home décor, and craft supplies. Local sewing communities and small businesses worry about losing an essential resource, particularly in rural areas where crafting stores are limited.
Despite the closures, Joann plans to continue investing in its e-commerce platform, aiming to offer a more robust online shopping experience. The company emphasized its commitment to supporting its loyal customer base, though job losses are expected across the country as a result of the downsizing.
While Joann’s future remains uncertain, analysts believe the restructuring could offer the company a chance to rebound, provided it successfully adapts to the growing dominance of online retail giants like Amazon.
